You're definitely better off running sealed switches, as the water/dirt will
quickly kill anything else. |

| Long-Course | An event held on a course that
is not less than 15km in length. Usually the event will be broken into
several races, with the car with the lowest overall time in each class winning.
Prologues are generally run at long-course events to determine race starting
order. |

| NTSC | National Television Standards Committee (also Never The Same
Colour). Format commonly used in the US (description). |

commonly used in Europe/Australia (description). |
| Parc Ferme | A 'closed park' used to hold race cars for a
specific duration following an event. Whilst in parc ferme, competitors may
not approach any car, without the permission and presence of an official.
Parc ferme is usually used in offroad racing to prevent early starters from gaining
an unfair advantage over cars that started after them. The advantage would
present itself in the form of additional time before the next race section.
Parc ferme periods should be outlined in the supplementary regulations. |
| Plenum | As in 'plenum chamber' - usually used to refer to the air box
between the throttle body and intake runners of an engine. It actually refers to
any chamber that contains air/gas at greater than atmospheric pressure; e.g. the chamber
used to allow outside air to enter a car at the lower edge of many windscreens (where the
pressure is higher than atmospheric). Ironically, this means that the general usage
is incorrect, as normally aspirated cars will almost never have a plenum chamber pressure
greater than atmospheric (due to air filters, piping and of course the throttle plate/s).
Engines with blowers/turbos/etc are a different matter entirely. |
| Prologue | A shortened form of a long-course
track, run by all competitors to aid with start-time seeding for the first race. |
| SAORRA | South Australian Offroad Racing Association. |
| Short-Course | An event held on a course that is less than 15km in
length. Usually the event will be broken into several races, with the car
with the lowest overall time in each class winning. Event organisers may
elect to run a shoot-out to determine best buggy/sedan/overall. Prologues
are not generally run at short-course events. |
| SPST | Single Pole Single Throw (switch -
description). See
description for DPDT. |
| Supplementary Regulations |
(aka. sup. regs) provided by the event organisers to provide information on
event start/finish times, additional requirements for cars (e.g. spark
arrestors), and associated information regarding the running of the event. |
| Swage | A method of cold-forming metal; also
referring to the tool used as a die or stamp to cold-form metal. 'Swaging'
a connector onto a high-pressure hose. |
| Swarf | Shavings produced from drilling,
cutting or grinding an object. In the automotive context; the metal swarf
littering the workshop floor because we can't find a broom. |
| Roll-Cage |
Bar-work, either internal or external to the car, that is designed to protect
you in the event of a roll-over or collision. Can also be used to provide
support to the existing body (except in cars where the roll-cage is the body).
Roll-cages can be either bolt-in or weld-in; the latter tending to add more
structural rigidity to the car. |
