A stock quad-cam uses a particular thickness bell
housing on the auto transmission. The Dellow conversion housing (I
think this was a first run for 'em, so they may have modified the design
now) is obviously a bee's-whisker thinner and as a result the two upper
bolts (shown left) entered the valley of the motor. This wouldn't have
been an issue in a normal road-going engine, however this unit gets a good
drowning after each race, leaving the inevitable pool of water in the motor
valley, which doesn't drain out if the drainage hole is blocked, which
allows the water time to penetrate these two bolt threads and rust them out. The end result of all this is the stripping of the thread in the ally block whilst removing the rusted bolts, requiring something like a helicoil to fix. This is especially difficult if the engine is in the car at the time... |

Here's another one of those things... Instead of drilling out our flywheel to accept a standard bolt, we had a few custom bolts made up for us. Obviously the elastic properties of the particular metal used in the bolt are not good enough and the thing has stretched when being torqued up. Luckily we didn't manage to snap any off in the crank... Needless to say, all these bolts were hit with a hammer (it makes sure we don't get tempted to reuse them) shortly after the picture was taken. |
